They should provide a more consistent and faster response to technical issues for the price. In my experience, customer support for TVPaint is a bit lacking. It's not inexpensive, and there is no monthly subscription plan, so the initial cost is high (students and teachers should be sure to inquire about EDU discount prices), but TVPaint is less expensive than a comparable over the long run software such as Toonboom Harmony Premium. Still, it is also suitable for the student or independent animator. This is a feature-rich, professional-level software (used in films such as Cartoon Saloon's "Song of the Sea" and "Wolfwalkers" and Studio Ghibli's "The Red Turtle," to name just a few ).
Animating in TVPaint with a Wacom tablet is the closest I've found to the experience of drawing traditional animation with pencil on paper, but with all the advantages of working in a digital environment.
